On Thursday I accompanied my sister as she registered for her first course in her Master’s Degree program. I was the proud older sister and I think I was more excited that day than she was.
One of the tasks during the orientation was for her to get her new student ID card. We located the office where the pictures were being taken. As I was waiting for her card to be printed, I looked down and noticed that there were some coloring books and supplies.
I asked who was coloring, and one of the individuals that was assisting told me that they were her supplies. She went on to tell me how much fun she and her co-workers had coloring while they were on break. She had a container full of all sorts of colored markers and pencils, and a bag with a couple of coloring books in it.
Another person that was there to get their new ID overheard our conversation and came over and starting telling us how much she enjoyed coloring. I told them all that I was about to be a newly minted Dr. and that my degree has a concentration in creativity and innovation. We all continued to chat for a few more minutes before we went our separate ways.
This conversation has really motivated me to explore how I can create an environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together to color. More to come!
